The Original Easter Egg
How It Started
To celebrate the film release of Wicked, Google added a limited-time Easter egg in November 2024. Searching terms such as “Wicked,” “Elphaba,” “Glinda/ Galinda,” “Ariana Grande,” “Cynthia Erivo,” or “Defying Gravity” surfaced a small green circle at the bottom of the screen bearing Elphaba’s hat — inviting you to click.
What It Did
Tap the hat and the results page “defies gravity”: elements float upward like bubbles while a film rendition of “Defying Gravity” plays. A follow-up click unleashes green smoke and drifting bubbles — a nod to Elphaba and Glinda’s color motifs (green and pink). The effect appeared on both desktop and mobile.
Its Impact
The playful animation, music cue, and Oz-themed visuals made the promo instantly shareable, with tech and entertainment outlets highlighting the surprise and encouraging fans to try it while it lasted.
Why It Was Removed
As a time-boxed promotion, the effect was never meant to be permanent and has since been retired from live Google results. We’ve restored the spirit of the experience so fans can revisit the moment.
The Restored Experience
What’s New
Our restoration keeps the whimsical beats — the witch-hat trigger, zero-gravity float, green smoke and bubble flourishes, and a musical homage — while modernizing compatibility and performance across today’s browsers and devices.
The Easter Egg Experience
Click the button above to reveal the witch’s hat. Tap it to launch the anti-gravity sequence with themed audio. Click again to swirl in emerald smoke and buoyant bubbles. When you’re ready, close the effect to return to your normal page.
How to Play
- Click the button above to start.
- Spot the green witch-hat button.
- Tap the hat to watch results float while the cue swells.
- Tap again for emerald smoke and drifting bubbles.
- Close the effect to restore the page.
We tuned the float physics and timing to mirror the 2024 promo, and preserved the Oz color language (emerald/rose) fans noticed during the original run — all while ensuring smooth performance on both mobile and desktop.
